This is a prototype for a new UM School of Communication magazine. This SOC Communique issue is a special film edition. The idea for the cover was to emulate a film studio with lights hitting “inside film as it would hit an actor.

This Dean’s Note uses justified type is to make it formal. The addition of the “BEHIND THE COVER” section was because I felt a “DEAN’S NOTE” and white space would be too cold. Also people do not usually pay attention to the Editor’s letter or Dean’s letter by adding this section, readers will hopefully look at the whole page.
-
The Table of Contents I stick with a strict grid to set the entire magazine up. White space is a very important design tool I used. I took certain visual cues from other spreads to draw a link to them such as the “Jesse Ponnock’s Music Video” and the “One Water” section are forms of this. The Socnews section follows the same idea as the table of contents. It’s a simple grid with very spacious gutters.
-
The Study Abroad: Spain layout draws cues from Spanish culture. The layout is to highlight a student’s work. I produced all of the work in this layout.
-
All of the images in the photography section where taken while I was in Spain studying abroad. The page has to small sequences to show highlights of my trip.
-
The Designs section shows diverse work from newspapers to magazine layouts. The Tech Specs explain what tools I used to create these designs.
-
The Teacher Profile is a standing feature that in this issue focuses on the movie, One Water, which a group of UM faculty created. The “E” is large to add a graphical element to the logo for the section.
-
The Production Notes is a Q and A section that interviews the professors on the work they created. Scenes are collection of images stills from the movie.
-
These spreads are about hot to create a music video. It documents student as they work and techniques they use to create their music video. This special section has a “How to” section which shows how to take out the green from green screen footage. The heavy uses of images are to help document the process. This is not a standing feature so it does not follow the same top header as the rest.
-
The Production Notes section has the Q and A like in prior sections, but it also includes why the video was made.
-
The How to section shows how to take out the green in footage.
-
Scenes are collection of images stills from the video. The Tech Specs explains the tools used on the video.
